Before you assume that you will need to leave your current employer to achieve your career change, have a look around and see if your career change goals can be satisfied where you are currently working. Although it is rare for people to achieve a career change without a change of employer, it is not unheard of. Of course, make sure that you are completely prepared to leave if your career change plans are not welcomed. It is very hard to say that you would be happier doing something else, and then to stay doing the same job which has made you so unhappy for so many years.
